Mimi Ward MA, CALP
I have been teaching children for 35 years and am more excited than ever to bring the new neuroscience to my dyslexic students. I earned my BA from Dartmouth College in 1985, my teaching credential from Cal State in 1990, my MA from CU in 1996 and my CALP in 2011. I began teaching elementary school in 1987 in South-Central Los Angeles. In addition to my work with children in academic settings, I have also taught art and African song and dance to students in both Los Angeles and Boulder, CO. When my own children encountered difficulties with the traditional school system due to their neurodiversities I became interested in dyslexia therapy and alternative teaching methods.
As an Academic Language Practitioner, I am trained in multi-sensory teaching and certified by the Academic Language Therapy Association. I have taken the Orton-Gillingham associate level coursework and am trained by Ron Yashimoto in advanced morphology. I am also trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy by the Beck Institute and am Team CBT Level One certified by the Feeling Good Institute. Working one on one with the students, I provide academic therapy individually tailored to each student's unique learning style. While teaching reading, writing, and spelling to struggling students, I also teach the important tools of Team CBT and Mind/Body medicine that empower students to manage the anxiety that comes with having a learning difference.
I have 20 years of experience navigating the education system for out of the box learners. I work with parents and students to create hybrid educational curricula for students. These curricula range from homeschool, to online school, to public school, to private school, and to everything in between. I help parents through the process of IEP, 504, and ALP plan writing, ensuring students get the appropriate accommodations and services. As a strong advocate for the rights of out of the box learners, I empowers both parents and students to understand themselves as important and valuable members of the academic community.
